Bulgaria - world's best value holiday destination
Brits travelling to the Southern Eastern European hotspot can enjoy a break away without busting the budget, including a pint of beer for just 49p, according to a special holidaymakers' advisory report released today.
The Teletext Holidays' 'World's Best Value Breaks Report'* was commissioned to determine which of our favourite locations** across the world actually deliver the best value for British tourists. Bulgaria, ideal for city and short-haul beach breaks, proved to be the pick of the bunch when measured against a variety of factors, from the cost of flights, food, drink and accommodation, to the quality of accommodation and the weather.
The research revealed that holidaymakers who choose Bulgaria can not only enjoy the world's best value pint of beer at just 49p, but also relax in a three star hotel double room for less than £50. Getting there and getting around also won't break the bank, with flights costing an average of £58 and the average taxi journey coming in at £1.45. A three course meal with service costs just £7 and a Big Mac comes in at £1.
Second placed Morocco also offers terrific value according to the report, especially for those wanting to embark on a luxury city break without breaking the bank - with a five star double room with breakfast in Marrakech costing on average around £80. Sun worshippers will appreciate a country with an average rainfall of just four days of rain a month and quenching their thirst won't be a problem either, with a beer costing just 51p a pint. Flights come in at £90 and once there, holidaymakers can enjoy easy travel around town with the average cab fare coming in at just £2.80.
Spain may remain the most visited destination for British holidaymakers year after year, but when it comes to value for money it comes a lowly 17th in the report. On arrival, Brits face average hotel accommodation costs ranging from £80 to £145 per night and an average of £7 to get around by taxi. A three course meal averages around £18 per head.
The Caribbean offers the best value hotel accommodation worldwide according to the report, making the likes of Cuba a perfect long-haul beach destination to soak up the Caribbean sunshine, where a double room in a three star hotel can be snapped for just £25 a night.
Ash Makkar, Marketing Director of Teletext Holidays said "Interest in countries such as Morocco and India has grown significantly, proving that people are becoming more adventurous than ever before when it comes to booking a trip abroad.
"The traditional holiday locations of the past 20-30 years will always remain popular but we hope that our 'World's Best Value Breaks Report' will give holidaymakers insight and inspiration when it comes to choosing their next overseas holiday, whether it's a European city break or a week in Goa."
Traditional favourites such as Italy and France failed to make their mark in the report, with surprise additions to the top ten including long haul destinations, India and South Africa, coming at 6th and 10th spots in the table respectively.
Holidaymakers who can stretch their budget in search of some sure fire sunshine, will find that once the average cost of a flight to South Africa has been negotiated (£716), they can enjoy a three course meal for just £8.50 and a pint for just 83p. Fantastic value can be found in both of these destinations, from low hotel charges at an average of £55 for three-star accommodation to extremely cheap cab fares at 55p a trip in India.
TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE BEST VALUE HOLIDAY Compiled by Mark Durden-Smith
1. Make the time to do the research. An hour online is worth its weight in gold. Comparison sites, teletextholidays.co.uk being the best of course will give you a good idea who is offering value for money and whose not.
2. Word of mouth. Recommendations from people you trust is a fantastic way to compliment your online research. 3. Flexibility is your friend. If you can be flexible with the dates and times you fly, the bargains are there to be had. If you don't have to travel when in peak holiday times - don't. And if you can stomach the morning alarm call, the early morning departures are far less likely to suffer from delays.
4. On the flip side - if you can't be flexible but know where you want to go and when - book in advance of advance and you will have plenty of time to enjoy looking forward to the trip.
5. If going abroad and you are exchanging currency look for places where buying back is commission free.
6. When you arrive ask the locals where they like to eat. Tourist hot-spots can be a rip-off and those who live there all year round tend to know where to get the best food for the best prices.
7. The best way to get a feel for a new place is to take your running shoes - good for the love handles and saves you paying for the sight seeing tour!
8. Don't always take the obvious option. For instance, in New York hotel accommodation can be astronomical but there are some great B&Bs that offer much better value for money.
9. Buy a yearly travel insurance package. There are some very reasonable deals to be found. Teletext Holidays now provides insurance via TV and online services.
10. For every destination that is in high season there's one that's in low season where there are deals and adventures to be had if you don't follow the crowd.
11. My pet hate. Don't let local taxi drivers rip you off. Find out how much it costs to make a journey before you get in the cab so they don't take you for a ride!
12. There's no place like home. The UK has some of the most amazing and interesting holiday destinations on the planet. Once the last bag has been squeezed in the boot, cross your fingers, pray for sunshine but appreciate this beautiful country of ours whatever the weather.
